SUGAR SKULL
Day 3 of 7 Days of Halloween!

Sugar skulls have been so popular this year, as every other year, and I knew I couldn't live up to some of the standards out there, but I definitely wanted to give it a try. I've never done one before despite admiring them for so many years. They're so versatile, I've seen many elegant, pretty ones but also some darker looking ones. They also look good on anyone, I believe. What I learnt from doing one for the first time, as long as you have a steady hand, good face paints and an imagination, they're pretty easy to do!
I only used one face paint set which was Snazaroo's Face Paint Ultimate Party Pack. I would definitely recommend Snazaroo face paints, this pack in particular if you are either a beginner or just like messing around with face paints. As far as I have heard, many professional face painters use Snazaroo, and I can see why! The coverage is fantastic and very little water is needed to get a flawless colour. I found it so easy to fix mistakes, I used micellar water on a cotton bud to do this, it didn't smear around and it was easy to go over with the colour underneath to correct that.
As my main passion in the beauty industry is traditional makeup, as opposed to face paints, SFX etc, I'm used to (and good, I think) at blending, so the main issue I had with this look was the small, precise parts. For example, I wasn't happy with the dots at all, but I left them on so perhaps you can learn from my mistakes. A good set of face paint brushes would be best to get the best sugar skull you could, which I did not have. I used a bobby pin for the dots, but perhaps I didn't use enough water with the paint so it was tacky therefore hard to get a nice even dot.
If you're looking for a quick, last minute costume, sugar skulls are a great option. All you'd need is a black outfit to go with it! Or you can dress it up, I would go with a corset in the same colours you would use on your face, maybe some lace and roses in your hair. I love the fact there are no limits on sugar skulls. I've been loving the glitter/diamente sugar skulls I've been seeing everywhere. It is, however, good to research some sugar skulls beforehand to get an idea of colours/themes/shapes that are used. Or you could just totally freestyle it and add in whatever! In my opinion, it's the eyes that make a sugar skull, a sugar skull. If you can build around them, you're set really!
I love how colourful sugar skulls are. Do you prefer colourful or black and white sugar skulls? Have you ever done a sugar skull face paint? I would love to see!
